ParticipantUgh, just lost my entire reply to your comment. Grr.
Agree agree agree – you get the point.
I can see where people come from on most characters etc (even if not my favorites), but it is interesting to see how some characters who have done far worse things get defended and Hook just gets ripped apart.
The way I see it Hook is a great combo of Dread Pirate Roberts and Jack Sparrow, I’ve said this from the beginning and it’s what I love about him most I think (contrary to seemingly popular belief, Hook fans don’t love him because he’s hot…that’s just a perk).
Hook seems to get Emma in a way that nobody has in a really long time and I think she gets to him as well, and is just reluctant to trust anybody because she’s been burned too badly before. Hook got under her skin though and if he hadn’t she wouldn’t have locked him up! She even said it was because she wanted to trust him and that was the problem.
What people seem to forget I think is the fact that we didn’t get to see what Hook would have done when he landed from the beanstalk. Cora pounced the moment he got there and every conversation between Hook and Emma in present day FTL that happened after that was IN FRONT OF CORA.
Hook does have a moral code (how refreshing for a villain…a pirate no less!…instead of using magic left and right and hurting random innocent people for the fun of it or because they’re upset). Hook used his one-time-only magic on Aurora to manipulate Cora because he was running out of options but he MADE SURE that her heart was returned to her safely.
Also, Hook totally threw that fight. He’s had WAY too much practice time with a sword and as mad as he was with Emma for leaving him there for 10 hours (and therefore forcing him to work with Cora again since she showed up and he is nothing if not in self-preservation mode), he doesn’t want any harm to come to her. As soon as he found out about what the lake was capable of, he had a plan to get to Storybrooke: repair the magic bean. Cora didn’t know that, but Hook DID.
Emma got everything she wanted out of that fight. Hook made sure to give Aurora’s heart back, Emma and Snow went through the portal so that Emma could get back to her kid. You really expect me to believe that he didn’t allow that to happen as hurt as he was? I’m fully expecting it to come up sometime when they fight again and nobody else is around. It’s an Ace up his sleeve for when he needs to make a point that he’s been on her side. I think the only reason he ever works against her is that the others offer him a chance at Rumple, and because Emma hurt him. I fully expect the pendulum to swing the other way sometime (hopefully) soon.
Technically he did cause the Aurora heart situation but he made sure to get it back and he helped Emma get the compass in the first place. But what else have we seen him do? He kicked the poor fish guy into the water so he wouldn’t suffocate. Cora’s answer to the annoying person who shouldn’t witness their arrival was to essentially kill the guy. Hook couldn’t do anything to reverse it without going against Cora (and he doesn’t have any magic and it wouldn’t have helped him to tick off Cora who he needs to distract people so that he can go after Rumple) but he DID save the guy in a way by not letting him die! Does he care about the random fish guy? NO. Does he senselessly go around hurting anybody who isn’t necessary to his particular plan? No. And even then he reverses the damage when he can.
I’m sure Snow & Charming wouldn’t be thrilled about Hook and Emma…but if anybody’s gonna understand eventually, it should be them. Look at where they started out!
I think Hook really isn’t as bad as everybody makes him out to be. He just reacts badly sometimes because he’s hurt (as do Rumple, Regina, Cora, etc etc) but he doesn’t go around killing random people at least. That’s something.
Just because he’s done bad things doesn’t mean it’s ok to defend a pairing like Rumbelle (for example) and then condemn CaptainSwan…both are the “good” girls bringing about the “bad boys” and goodness knows no character on this show is a saint, even the savior, and others have done far worse things. (Though I have a feeling at least part of the Rumbelle vs CaptainSwan bashing has to do with Rumple and Hook being major enemies. I for one love both).
I love the CaptainSwan chemistry and look forward to much more of their interaction. This show is still about hope, right?

ParticipantI’ve been 100% behind the Bae is Neal is Peter Pan theory from the beginning. Loving seeing all these details (haven’t had a chance to read through all the pages lately) but I just wanted to say for all those who think it’s impossible because of the land without magic thing…
Peter Pan is one of those characters (like Alice, the Wizard from Wizard of Oz, etc) that STARTED in our world (aka “a land without magic”) and ended up in another world, before returning to our world. So technically Bae could have landed in our world somewhere, spent centuries in Neverland as either Peter or a Lost Boy, thus staying 14 for a long time, and then was either visiting our world (just like Peter often did…) or was in our world for some special reason or another when the curse was enacted, thus keeping him here, where he aged right along with Emma and August, etc etc.
So it is entirely possible that both what we know from the show (Bae being sent to a land without magic) and the traditional story of Peter Pan can coexist. It would also explain the time gap of centuries for Bae because Rumple is centuries old but he enacted the curse to get to the time and place that Bae ended up. Also since Bae was sent “through time and space” he could have landed here at any point in time, so who knows how long he stayed wherever, but Neverland would explain so much and how many times has been referred to as a “lost boy.”
It would also make some very interesting drama with the already complicated Rumple-Hook situation. Just my cents that nothing has officially ruled this out, most especially not “a land without magic” as Peter started out here too. There’s more ways to Neverland than just a magic bean 😉

Participant@Surayya I like the way you think and couldn’t have said it better myself! I’ve actually been hoping for the pairings you mentioned near the end for exactly those reasons! I’ll wait to reserve complete judgment on Neal until we see more of him but I’ve been CaptainSwan all the way since Tallahassee aired. We haven’t gotten to see enough of Hook’s backstory for some to see potential but glad others agree with me that it’s there! (Aren’t there lots of characters that were hated before they were loved? Give a guy a chance before condemning!) We all see different things different ways, but I can totally see things working out exactly the way you suggested and am thrilled I’m not alone – too much bashing around here lately, makes it hard to (vocally) love something like this sometimes. You just made my day with your well-thought out and well-written argument for all of the above, so thank you 🙂

ParticipantNot only was it an Ajira flight, it was flight 53 and 5+3=8 🙂
Also: every actor (that I know of) from Once that appeared on Lost was also in this episode!
Alan Dale (King George / Charles Widmore)
Emilie de Ravin (Belle / Claire)
Jorge Garcia (Anton / Hurley)
Lana Parilla (Regina / …can’t remember, was just 1 ep in season 3)I remember being excited knowing that 3 of them would be in the ep and partway through said (jokingly) now where is King George? …and then he appeared. So all 4 were on last night 🙂

ParticipantLove Anton (loved Hurley and Diego Soto as well) so glad to see him around. Hope we see him again soon. 🙂
As much as I love the main characters, this is Once Upon A Time, not Snow White (and most of the main characters are from just the one story). It’s nice to see others from time to time too. Look forward to seeing Anton again soon (I hope!)

ParticipantSo glad to hear something positive about CaptainSwan! I completely agree: once Cora & Regina inevitably go against him and he’ll have to work with Emma again. As Snow said tonight, Hook goes where the wind blows, it’s in his nature and he will have to switch back at some point.
Glad to see the reinforcement from Jane Espenson, so excited at least one of the writers enjoys CS like we do!

ParticipantI’m the exact opposite…I can crochet but I can’t knit to save my life! I know there are a bunch of knitters around here but wow, dollhouses! I’m too much of a perfectionist but I bet it’s a fun hobby. Would love to see some pics!

ParticipantIt’s my understanding that being listed as a regular means they’re in over half the episodes for that season. So while it may confirm he’ll be around for the latter half of the season since he was announced as a season-regular for 2nd half of the year, nothing is ever listed to us as “permanent” (sadly, because I love the character). It does or should mean however that we will be seeing a lot more of him this season and potentially beyond that (I really hope so!). Some of the actors that were regulars last season were demoted to recurring for this season and haven’t been seen nearly as much (think Archie or August).
Last season since the original order was for 13 episodes, our beloved Huntsman was listed as a regular and we all know how well that turned out. *cries* I’m really really hoping we get much more of Hook. He’s one villain that Walt Disney himself said he just couldn’t kill because he knew people would like the character too much so here’s hoping *crosses fingers*
On a story note I just feel like there’s sooo much more potential to dive into with this character (we haven’t even made it to Neverland yet!) and he seems to be an homage to PotC as well so here’s hoping to much more Hook in the future and that we don’t lose yet another great character. (He’s my favorite!)

ParticipantYou’re darn right I shipped Skate! Sawyer’s the best! <3 There is just SO MUCH potential for CaptainSwan that I hope they acknowledge it and go with it rather than tease us with awesomeness and then go the predictable way. One of the big reasons I loved Lost and now Once is that they start going somewhere seemingly familiar/predictable and then throw a curveball. Hopefully they build up to making us think it's going the other way but are so overwhelmed with the incredibleness that is CaptainSwan they change their minds and throw a curveball? *One can dream, right?*
I’m definitely interested in learning more Hook backstory. I wanna get to Neverland so we can see what his actual storyline is rather than the perceived villain status. All the promos got right so far is that he is a “charming swashbuckler” 😉
I always preferred the Hook movie to the original Peter Pan (and it plays on the idea of a grown up Peter – I can see this being a favorite of Eddie & Adam as well since Peter Pan is their favorite story) but I think we may get that + a new twist on Hook’s story too. Neverland sure sounds interesting and probably not the traditional story since nothing ever is around here. Can’t wait!
Still need to find an awesome CaptainSwan icon. So glad I finally have something to ship!

ParticipantOne of the things I really love about OUAT is that the stories ARE twisted from the versions we know. I definitely got the impression that Hook’s interaction with the Lost Boys in Neverland was very different from what we might expect from every other version we’ve ever known. Not sure I’m on board with the Peter Pan theory at the moment, but definitely looking forward to more Hook backstory. Things just sound like he has more knowledge and a softer spot for the Lost Boys than any Hook we’ve ever known.
