In reply to: Will Emma Use the Shears?

ParticipantThe shears themselves raise a question about the true source of Emma’s magic. Is she magical because she is the Savior or is it from her being a product of true love? Throughout the series the two things are linked so often it is not clear which elements are the cause of the different parts of Emma’s various powers. I can see it being that the shears are used on Emma against her will (either through a villain striking against her or circumstances being such that she has no other choice) and she maintains her magic, even if it is weaken through the loss of the savior bond.

ParticipantYep, the Doctor Who line is far more lyrical!
But I like this line from Emma. It provides the gritty, pessimistic world view that was such a characteristic of Season 1 Emma. Besides, it’s refreshingly dark compared to all the syrupy sweet stuff about ‘happy endings’ that all the characters blather on about these days. Also, it’s true. Impermanance is a fact of life and saying goodbye to the people you love is always hard, no matter when it happens.

General thoughts: I was looking forward to this episode and really wanted to like it. Unfortunately, it didn’t live up to the hype. The story was simplistic and most of the important questions were not answered.
Likes:
– The actors who played Jasmine and Aladdin.
– The Wicked Sisters scenes.
– Emma FINALLY telling her family about her vision.
– Aladdin telling Jasmine that her kingdom was suffering long before Jafar came along. Power to the peasants!! I wish someone would say a similar line to Snow!
– Regina saying what we’ve all been wondering – why isn’t she in Emma’s vision?
Mixed
– Aladdin’s accent. WTH?!!
– The shears. Fate, predetermination, choice – these are weighty topics. Trust OUAT to ‘cut’ through all the complexity with a quick snippety snip from a golden macguffin.
Dislikes:
– The many, many questions left unanswered in this episode. How in the world did Jasmine know that Aladdin had magic? How and why did Jasmine end up in TLUS? Why did Aladdin finally reject Saviourhood? How does Jasmine know her kingdom is in peril when she was stuck in TLUS?
– The predictability of the Jasmine/Aladdin flashbacks.
– The tracking spell able to link light magic together. Honestly, these tracking spells acquire new powers every season.

ParticipantAhh. I interpreted as Archie was referring to visions and it was the Evil Queen killing Emma in them. Not as the Evil Queen killing the Oracle.

ParticipantHmm, I just checked the transcript, and while the conversation that I remembered is there, it is very much open to interpretation. The text:
Now, Mr. Hyde, before his untimely demise, told me the Oracle gave Emma visions of her future, and she wasn’t willing to tell me about them, so…
It was you.
You killed her.
Well, if that surprises you, you’re not much with reading people.
Probably not good for a therapist.
But since the Oracle is gone, I need information, and you, Cricket, are my only source.
So, Archie assumed that she did it, and EQ was happy to be assigned credit for such an act. But she didn’t actually confirm or deny that she did so, she only confirmed that she would happily have done so.
For all we know, Evil Queen got there too late, and that is why she couldn’t get the information! Maybe she saw who did it, and maybe she didn’t, but either way she is not telling!

ParticipantDidn’t Evil Queen confess to it when she kidnapped Archie? She was looking for Emma’s secret, but the Oracle didn’t tell her?

ParticipantHook will offer the shears, Emma will be angry, then she’ll be tempted, then she’ll reject the shears (and everyone will accept her decision this time), and then she’ll need to use them.
This is what will happen…I’m 99% sure of it!

Nothing grand or special, but it was very entertaining at least!
Liked:
For those two seconds Raphael Sabarge had pretending to be the Evil Queen pretending to be Archie…you can tell that was fun for him! It’s good to have some Archie back!
Aladdin’s actor really surprised me….I had my initial concerns but he seems to be really in tune with the character! Especially the small quirks he had like the way he twisted his face or scratched the back of his head….I really applaud both him and Karen David (Jasmine) for bringing two iconic Disney characters to life! Their chemistry and way of acting was the highlight for me.
Evil Queen & Zelena sisterly bonding and malevolent planning…okay, I really liked it! And I’m glad to see they remember that the Wicked Witch of the West in Zelena was technically supposed to be far worse than the Evil Queen, and although it’d be easier and better to just split Zelena from the WWW, this will do.
The family rounding around Emma was nice to see, and I really hope to see Emma and Aladdin sort of bond over the whole savior thing, they look as if they could be really great friends.
Mixed:
So the shears can be used to cut off one’s fate? Okay, I guess I can take this answer. But at least show us when Aladdin used them, like was it after Jafar paid him that little visit in the season premiere?
And no one knew there was a crypt in the middle of the forest? Like seriously….in all 31 Years of Storybrooke…NO ONE knew there was a crypt in the middle of the forest…in a small town?!
Disliked:
NO ABU!!! So we could get flying monkeys in S3, but not one regular monkey in S6?!
NO IAGO! This episode really could have used some of that parrot’s wisecracking.

Bringing this over from the general thread:
–I’m really disappointed that Aladdin used the Shears. I guess he serves as a foil to Emma but there’s still no advancement in the Savior mythos; Aladdin has nothing to offer Emma except a way out.
Or a way to activate all of the potential saviors for the finale!
Oh sure. Let’s just go straight up Buffy S7. Why not.
I think it sounds like a very Disney resolution, in a good way: some problems are too big for one person to handle, we all have to band together, the Force is with us, that sort of thing. Emma is even the right age to have watched Buffy while growing up; she could get the idea from the show. They might have to be vague about referring to Buffy on-screen if the corporate family tree doesn’t let them say it directly, and I don’t think everyone would stay magical after the resolution, but I’m guessing the writing team expected this to be the final season when they started work after the hiatus, so a big finale that involves everyone in town could’ve be on their minds.
On a more mundane note, relatively speaking: if those shears can cut through fate, they can cut through the barrier at the edge of town.

KeymasterThe big question is if the effects of the shears can be undone. We’ve seen Emma lose her magic before back in 3B, but eventually she was able to regain it. Could the same be the case with Aladdin?
Maybe if he *wishes* (ahem) really hard?
OR, possibly more likely, there’s a reason why we didn’t get a Aladdin/Jasmine kiss tonight. Cue one TLK for the couple.
