In reply to: Season 5A In Review
TheWatcher
Participant1) What was your favorite episode of 5A?
Eh. Probably “Dreamcatcher” or “Nimue.”
2) What was your least favorite episode of 5A?
Bear King but only because it felt so tacked on. I honestly can’t decide my least favorite episode. They were all pretty unmemorable for me this season.
3) Overall thoughts on the Dark Swan/Camelot arc?
Horribly executed, not what I wanted or expected. Go back to the drawing board, do It again.
4) Who was your favorite new character?
Close call between Merlin and Nimue.
5) What was your favorite moment?
Nimue and the dark ones watching as Emma reforges Excalibur. That was really creepy and magical. Ooooh, also the brave witch’s scenes. Loved her.
6) What was your favorite plot twist?
Everyone walking into Camelot, only to arrive back in SB 6 weeks later with Evil Emma hamming it up. It was very captivating. Even though we all suspected it.
7) What was your least favorite plot twist?
Rumpel being deceptive. AGAIN! Sheesh! Can this man EVER change?
8) Overall grade for S5A and final thoughts?
C. Frozen arc was my least favorite arc…and I think I enjoyed this arc even less than that one. It was just… bad. Hook as the dark one is fine but there were too many problems with it. And yeah, I’m no CS shipper and this season made me even less of one because of how badly (as I perceived it) these two people are together, so having to watch this arc go from “Emma is the dark one and causing havoc” to “Emma and Killian love story, bro!” was really an eyeroll for me. I could have standed it if it were interesting. It wasn’t. Seriously. Evil Emma would have been a far better story. But this was just another ship sailing thing. What else did I hate? Merlin died. Camelot arc was a waste of my time. I have so many unanswered questions from LAST season that I was hoping to get answers to (WHO THE HECK IS LILY’S FATHER?!?!?!?!!) And I honestly can’t even.
This season was bad. Will possibly not rewatch.

ParticipantFavorites
-Everything Zelena, except the suddenness of her departure
-Regina: “So I hear we’re giving up?” (This was overheard in the writers’ room and picked up as an actual line. :P)
-Rumple’s selflessness in sparing Belle’s feelings by sending her away
-Belle’s return
-Emma back to being Emma
-Performances of our favorites, despite the material they were working withLeast favorites
-Everything else, including:
-Lack of established character motivations
-Lack of established plot mechanics enabling what was done via magic
-Ruination of the few things I liked with un-foreshadowed twists at the end
-Gutted result of all-season tension building, as I’d predicted
-The ghost town that is Storybrooke … some extras might add a little something to the production and the stakes
-Apparent all-dogs-go-to-hell worldview, robbing all people everywhere of all hope
-Charmings giving up
-Plot resets
-GOING TO THE UNDERWORLD

ParticipantWriting this without looking at the other replies.
Not sure how I feel about this one either. It was another almighty mess because of
-The dropped storyline of Arthur wanting to take over SB and make it into his own personal Camelot. (Perhaps he will do this while our Heros are in the Underworld? Then we now have Hades and possibly Rumple as the antagonists, so would A&E add Arthur to the list?).
-The unecessary information about Hook killing his father etc-it added some amount of emotional depth, but I think that it would have been enough for Emma, the woman he is supposed to love, to be able to convince him to be a better man. (I was irritated that it took our queen to do it). As I had suspected a few days ago, it added nothing to the plot. It was as if they justed wanted to shoe horn in the EQ to keep the character’s fans happy. Well, I wasn’t.
-Lack of answers as to why it was darkness that came out of Merlin (when Emma used excalibur to revive Hook) when he was only supposed to be light.
-Lack of answers as to why not knowing you are the DO would not give you any of the symptoms.
-The EQ walking into a tavern (that looked remarkably the same tavern set for all 5 seasons), and no one paying attention. They didn’t bow down or anything….I would have thought they would be all too scard of her not to!
-The scene of young Killian and his father on the boat….couldn’t they have just put a large doll in one of the beds and called it Liam? It was weird to see his father only pay attention to him.
-Emma was too easily fooled by Hook-as-Henry. It was too obvious that it was Hook as no one came through the door, and Henry was standing in the wrong place to have come through a back door.
-It didn’t make sense for Zelena to plonk herself down in the Mayor’s office and tell Robina all about her changing her mind. At that point, the character thought that Robina were going to die and all she had to do was wait that out. (I did like the comment about the old ball-or something like that).
-Oh so Regina couldn’t work the wand because she didn’t believe in herself? Not because she wasn’t dark enough? Come on! The rules of using this wand are what, again? And how convenient that her believing in herself was a suddenly a requirement to use the wand successfully. And how did she come to the conclusion that the town had come to believe in her as a hero? She has actually done very little!
-where the heck was Zelena’s baby when all this was going on and who the heck will take care of her while Robin and Regina are in the Underworld. And Roland too??? Wouldn’t want to give either to Rumple and Belle!
But yeah.
Hook sacrificing himself and everyone going to the Underworld to retrieve him-called it, as did many others, I assume. I was wrong about the point at which he decided to sacrifice himself, though. He really did despise Emma for a time! Which I really don’t get.

ModeratorAlso, if it’s a life for a life…who will sacrifice their life to allow Hook to come back to Our World?
I took what Emma said about splitting her heart with Hook’s to avoid having to pay with another life.

ParticipantThat’s true, but military personnel usually have a better plan than “leave them with the fairies” which was the last stated plan we heard. I’m bothered by the way they set this upcoming arc up; Why does Emma need to put Henry or both her parents in danger to do this?

ParticipantDo you want to know the worst part about all of this? It’s that:
1. Rumple now has a clean heart, so he can go about doing bad things for at least 200 years until it darkens up again.
2. This is the opposite of 3A. Rumple was so accepting of being the Dark One, using it as a means to an end to find Henry. Then, realizing that he has to save everyone, he chose the heroic way out and killed his father to save his family. Now, having had the heroic way out by getting Belle out of town and giving “Excalibur” to Emma and Regina, he decided to undo that by, again, giving into the Darkness.
This was sloppy, idiotic storytelling that, as much as it caught me off guard, it had me screaming (and laughing) in anger. I mean, I wanted Rumple to be the Dark One again, but not willingly. If we had seen him be forced upon that darkness again and, as had been foreshadowed with Emma and Merlin, use it for good, I could’ve dealt with that. But not this. Not this mockery of a fairy tale.
Since we’re (literally) going to Hell, let Hades help us all.

ParticipantI also dont understand the mechanics of how it even happened. Was the answer literally just squid ink?
I honestly don’t know. I mean I have zero idea because I was too busy screaming.
Another question…if she’s no longer the Dark One…how in the world did Emma hear the dagger calling to her?

ParticipantEverything about this episode is everything I hate about this show now. I cannot even begin to describe the level of idiocy this show has become. Emma doesn’t second guess her choice to endanger her 13-year-old son’s life by taking him to the Underworld with her ? Does anyone even in SB have a brain? Why the crap is Regina letting Henry go? And why the heck are Robin, Regina, Snow and David going to the Underworld? They’re all parents of INFANTS and YOUNG CHILDREN? What they heck do they care if Hook stays dead? And I cannot even begin to describe my loathing that Emma cannot let Hook die a hero because of Rumple, but she will let Neal (her son’s father) stay dead. And Rumple is EVIL for reasons that make no sense. Oh and Rumple probably got a child on Belle after her tricked her AGAIN and then concealed from her the truth that he’s the dark one…again! And no one thought to tell Belle even though they knew the truth, so Belle is going to spend another half season being duped and used by Rumple. I CANNOT EVEN.
ALL OF THIS. EVERY LAST BIT OF IT. I’m pretty angry right now and trying to find various outlets to vent. GGGRRRRRRR
When you really think about it….what did Neal die for? For his father to remain a manipulative, lying monster…for the mother of his child/true love to move on with the man that stole away his mother….for his son to never get to know a true father/son relationship…..for his memory to be tarnished and his body to continuously roll over in his grave….What did Neal die for?
Adam and Eddy…are they this crazy or just plain stupid?
