But the CGI, we will see.  I’m excited to see the hourglass.  It’s a pretty iconic scene with Jasmine stuck in there.  Now what’s up with the cave Emma and company are going through?  Is that the cave from the movie and is that cave under storybrooke somewhere?  And are they having Aladdin be stuck there like he was in the movie but this time, there was no genie to break him out?  And is that why they were originally going to call this episode the diamond in the rough bc Aladdin is the diamond trapped in this cave under storybrooke?

We learned that the only way to kill a doppleganger is to kill the original. What do you think of this revelation? And what does this mean for Regina? Is she now destined to die as well?

When I watched the episode, it didn’t strike me as counter-intuitive, but now that I’ve read your argument, I agree with you. Maybe it’s got something to do with the fact that they don’t share bodies anymore, like they did with in the Jekyll/Hyde flashbacks? So essentially, we’ve got these personalities inhabiting bodies that materialised out of nothing. If you really wanted to, you could try to make some pseudo-scientific argument about the new body drawing its life force from the original, or perhaps being a sort of reflection of the original. But if this was the case, you’d expect the doppelganger’s body to disappear after he/she dies. So no, I can’t make sense of it.

It strikes me as completely bizarre that not one of these characters has thought of the idea of reintegrating Regina’s dark side. They need to head over to Storybrooke library and check out some books on psychology. But seriously, Snow’s always going on about “being who you really are” and we went through a whole arc where Emma learned to accept the magical part of herself. You’d think they’d be able to extrapolate these lessons to Regina’s dark side.

But there’s no way they’re killing off Regina. No, not even at the end of the series. Look at what happened with Robin. Just three episodes later, they were backtracking about what really happened to him (obliterated, but apparently not) and now they’re bringing him back in some capacity, probably to placate the fans. Regina is about a million times more popular than Robin. They wouldn’t dare.

Yeah, this argument seemed a little harsher than most.  I get that Belle is angry but Rumple, in his rather bumbling way was only trying to protect Belle from one of his many enemies.  And I probably won’t win awards for siding with Rumple in this relationship.

Here’s my problem with Belle’s now hatred of the person she sees.  She used to see the man behind the beast which is what endured us to this relationship but now she just sees him as evil.  Last season, Rumple told her that he wasn’t going to change and that part of her liked him dark.  This is absolutely true.  All throughout their relationship, she has always wanted Rumple to be a good man … even going so far as to leave him in Season 4 when she discovered his deception.  BUT in Season 5 when he had finally become a hero with a pure heart, she ditched him at the well where they were married.  How cruel is that?  He’s finally become the man she always wanted him to be and that’s the time to leave him?

And then, right after the rejection, he runs into Dark One Hook who taunts him about the dagger and how he must miss it.  C’mon … Does anybody else think that Belle is the reason he was tempted again by the dark side and found a way to become the Dark One again?

And what kills me is how easily Belle forgives Hook for trying to kill HER a few times and how really evil he became as the Dark One.  Rumple did sacrifice himself to save her and Bae (I doubt he thought he’d be resurrected) so did she forget that?   It always bothered me that last season, when Rumple was trying to escape Merida (and Emma) that he questioned that he was never brave and Belle never brought up the part when he killed himself and his father to save the two people he loved.

Yeah, I am behind Rumple on this … Belle is confusing.  And at least Rumple is trying, his own ham handed way, of keeping communication open with her.

I think, for the moment, that a pro/con list is safer for me because I’m feeling all manner of conflict.

PRO: Both Hyde and Jekyll were well portrayed by their actors. Hyde’s been the better of the two all along, but Jekyll really brought his A-game this week.

PRO/CON: Classic OUAT twist that the story is more complicated than what you think–though this is not the first time the villain’s story is “because of a love interest.”

    PRO: Good costumes

PRO/CON: There was so much to explore about society and how it dictates how we present ourselves to the world and how it can feel like we are leading a double life. They did a decent job with the amount of time allotted but it’s a gold mine.

CON: Mary’s entire backstory. If this was the first time the show were to have women be sexually aggressive and then be punished for it or explained that this is part of villainy, I would be willing to discuss the point but Mary is not the first case, not even by a long shot. When they want women to be “bad” and given traits that are deemed “bad” and need to be corrected, it’s aggressively sexual. From the EQ to Zelena to Lacey to Emma…it’s not…pretty. And, yes before anyone says it, I know that it’s Victorian England (well, Fictional) and that it’s upholding certain mores about that society in that time, but…again, Mary isn’t the first case where sex is used to distinguish, for wont of a better trope, Madonnas and Whores.

PRO: The flashbacks felt relevant and for more than just the current plot. Again, there’s a lot there and not just about the serum. Society, science vs magic, repression, emasculation….all good thought-provoking, conversation worthy elements.

I am slightly worried now that the reason that Regina isn’t in Emma’s vision is because she’s dead. I mean, I doubt that the writers would actually get rid of Lana but I feel like it’s something that we need to consider now.

…..what if Jasmine is the savior though. Has it been expressly stated that he was a savior? Or have they just said that there has been more than one before Emma. Something about tonight episode gave me that impression what with Jasmine talking about saving her kingdom. And now the promo has Jafar trapping her in the hourglass saying saviors always die…. it’d be a twist…

GENERAL: I am really really torn this week. There were some less than ideal epiphanies and themes but on the other hand some of the smaller moment of this week–like Snow teaching–were really great and I wish we could ease up off the plot and focus on that kind of storytelling. I also think the show managed to mine quite a bit of food for thought even in some murky waters which I’ll always applaud. We also had a lot of strong performances from Hyde, Rumple, Jekyll, and the Evil Queen.

    Rating…gosh. I don’t know. Maybe…a 7.5/10

    LIKED

–The cute family breakfast scene. Look! Normal things!

–“All magic needs is a little science”

–Rumple still knows how to recognize a desperate soul. Jekyll being rejected by his community but so desperately wanting to prove himself to others…sound familiar?

–We’ve had several balls this season; all the gowns and rooms have been well done!

–“Alright sister! Let’s dance” *Proceeds to fall straight down with a wave of the EQ’s hand.*

–Hyde and the EQ are a bizarre totally loony team up. Like Hades and Zelena last year, they are so over the top and crazy that you have to smile when you see them.

–Bobby as DarkOne!Rumple is still entertaining, 6 years later. You can tell it’s the role he prefers by about a mile.

–Snow teaching! It’s not Mary Margaret teaching; it’s actually Snow teaching.

    MIXED

–Emma, we know you’re the Savior. You don’t have to say it every single scene even if this entire season is about Savior mythology.

–Rumple names Hyde “Hyde” because he was all the parts that Jekyll had to…hide. Oof.

–I have a ton of issues with Mary’s backstory and what the show demonstrated tonight. The basic sum is that Mary wanted a man who would show her passion and desire and overthrow societies conventions. For these thoughts and her acting upon them, Mary died. She was, essentially, punished for her sexual feelings. I guess you can argue that Jekyll (and Hyde) were punished in the long run, but not for expressing their sexual feelings–Hyde is basically a walking talking id–but for keeping Jekyll repressing them. There were a lot of sexual overtones this episode with a binary that men should be virile and women passive. Jekyll is the real villain because he’s weak and, basically, impotent. After the past two weeks in America, this sort of backwards old school gender dynamics really rubbed me the wrong way.

    DISLIKED

–Really????! Rumple basically locked Belle in a CAGE and then said “you’ll thank me someday.” I cannot with how this show has turned one of their best, most loved couples into something egregiously damaged and abusive.

–And LATER! “You may not think you need me, but you do! You will come back to me..even for necessity” DONE. 100% DONE with this ship. Basically…you don’t know your own head and heart and you need me because of that. I know what you need better than you do. You shape up and hop to, little miss. You’re my wife and it’s time you behaved like one. I can’t believe the writers have done such a through job of destroying Rumbelle.

–‘Shirin’s” story about the princess who didn’t embrace herself and lost her kingdom…heavy handed way to tell “Shirin’s” story without revealing who she is. As if we all don’t know. Shock everyone! The princess in the story was Shirin!

–I really don’t like Emma’s brown coat. Why the change? Usually her jackets are symbolic of something. Is it because she’s doubting her own saviorhood? Probably, but it’s still an ugly coat.

–Really dislike the idea that in order to kill the doppelganger you have to kill the original. They are the same person! They are two sides of the same coin; one isn’t more powerful or more “real” than the other. It’s about integration and learning to temper both sides of yourself. So Hyde is, ipso facto, which also means that the Evil Queen is less “real” than Regina but…that’s a really silly way to go. They are one and the same. Regina is the Evil Queen, always. It’s about learning to keep the darkness at bay and listening to your “higher angels.”

Im wondering if he is going to like….come out of the womb as an adult. Wait, what i mean is he will magically someone cast himself out to interact with everyone. Not that belle gives birth to a live adult.

I will laugh for days if Belle pops out a grown man! XD

To be honest…I wouldn’t put it past Adam and Eddy at this point to have someone cast yet another Dark Curse that will freeze time in Storybrooke for twenty something years, but Belle manages to send her son out into the real world, and he’s going to have to come back and break the curse like Emma did. Bonus will be Zelena snuck her daughter Robyn out, whose going to come back as potentially one of the main villains, and yet another Mills Woman with issues. And heck, while they’re at it…go ahead and make the family tree even more icky by having Morpheus & Robyn wind up as true loves! I literally put nothing past this show at this point! XD

Hmmm….Robin Hood hinted that he had quite a dark past, one even somewhat on level of Regina’s. If he comes back via wish, then I’m quite sure the second half of the season’s theme will be like “Be Careful What You Wish For”. Instead of the Robin everyone knew and loved, it’d be a monster returning.

What if he comes back with no memories of the “Hero” version of himself, but as the “Villain” version instead. Perhaps he was a trained assassin for King John?
